Documents

The publication of detailed, comprehensive and easily understood documents to support the implementation of key UN/EDIFACT messages was one of ITIGG"s key tasks.
To date this has resulted in the release of a large number of documents related to the IFTM** set of freight movement messages, and the CO**** set of container messages as well as a number of other messages used in the transport sector. Those documents which have been finalised are available for free download from this site or from other member sites, like SMDG.

ITIGG documents are currently of two types:

  1. Detailed recommendations covering segment, code and data usage in every segment of a message or a related group of messages (known as "Principles and Rules" documents).
  2. These documents are "high level" and are not intended for implementation.
  3. Sample implementation guidelines for individual messages derived from the recommendations in the Principles and Rules documents (known as "International Reference Guidelines").
  4. These documents provide more specific guidance for developers wishing to design specific purpose guidelines. In some cases users may choose to use the International Reference Guideline for their local implementation.

ITIGG does not always choose to produce an International Reference Guideline for every message of interest to the transport community. Instead, this task is often assigned to an ITIGG member or associated group. Thus the Reference Guideline for the BAPLIE message is maintained by the shiplanning Message Development Group (SMDG), and the Guideline for the DESTIM message is maintained by the Concord EDI Group, in accordance with the ITIGG Principles and Rules which apply to each message.

Changes to documents

ITIGG documents are reviewed at regular intervals, usually coinciding with the six monthly meetings of the UN/CEFACT Forum. These meetings formally endorse proposals which have been developed in advance through electronic mail dialogue amongst ITIGG members. Proposals can be put forward by anyone with an interest in implementation of UN/EDIFACT transport messages, by contacting the SMDG Secretariat.
